Thomians Dumped At Home By A Superior Kings Side

Kingswood College Kandy came out with one of the best performances of the season to topple the high riding Thomians in their own back yard on Saturday. The Kings lead the game 22 points to 05 during the short whistle.

The Thomians coming in to the game with a superb display of rugby against the Petes which ended in a draw the previous week were found guilty of being too arrogant at times and spilled the ball on far too many instances. The Kingswoodians on the other hand capitalized on the mistakes made by the home team and pounced at every given opportunity. Deputy skipper Rajitha Sansoni had an exceptional game at number fifteen and showed everyone present at the Thomian grounds why he is considered as one of the best full backs in the schools circuit.

The Kingswood line looked like poetry in motion and made some early inroad in to the Thomian territory. Center Lavanka Perera was the first man to go over for the visitors when he pierced the dodgy Thomian defense to score an unconverted try. Rajitha Sansoni then increased the lead with a perfectly executed drop goal which left the Thomians in awe. It was set up perfectly by the Kingswood forwards with some hard hits in the center and scrum half Mohomed Afzal darted a quick pass to his full back who obliged with the three points.

The third try for the Kingswoodians was the best of the match after a series of quick hands by the Kings three quarters saw the skipper Mohomed Fazli taking the ball and going over for his first try of the match. Fazli took a blinder of a pass by his outside center Lavanka and ran through the middle to score. Sansoni added the extra points to make it 15 points to nil at once stage. The Thomians hit back during the later part of the first half through their star center Anrudda Wilwara who went over for a superb individual try. Thomians failed to make the conversion.

Kingswood had the momentum going their way when they went in for the breather when they scored another three-quarter try and this time by full back Rajitha Sansoni. He added the extra points to make it 22 points to 05 at half time.

The second half saw the Thomians throwing everything at the Kingswoodians and the Kingswood defense held firm keeping the Thomians at bay. However Wilwara went over for the home side for the second time and this time it was converted by winger Devin Jayasinghe. The scores read 22-12. The dying stages of the game saw Thomian second row forward Dinuk de Silva going over for a consolation try to make the final score 22-17 in favour of the Kingswoodians.

The Thomians did not display the flair which they displayed last week against the Peterites and looked a completely different unit. On the other hand the Kingswoodians played the game to a certain plan and made optimal use of their full back Rajitha Sansoni who used the conditions to perfection. He used the up and under’s to unsettle the Thomian back line and had a very professional approach to the game.

The Thomian attack lacked conviction and was guilty of being too predictable at one stage with the Kingswoodians expecting their every move. They will have to pull their socks up as they will be facing a pumped up Royal unit next week when they take them on for the Michael Gunaratne Trophy at Reid Avenue. Kingswood College will end their league with a much easier opponent in the form of Wesley College at Bogambara next week.
